Anchor Bay Guest House (Cape Town, South Africa)

We stayed at Anchor Bay Guest House in Cape Town, South Africa for 7 nights.  Overall, the guest house provided comfortable lodging and great service, but the wifi quality was too poor for us to consider staying again. Across 7 nights, we paid $50.71 per night after a fourth night free benefit from our Citi Prestige credit card.

Anchor Bay Guest House has four rooms in total. We stayed in the Seahorse room 3 nights and then moved to the Owl room for 4 nights. The Owl room is spacious (two closets, two large twin beds, a large desk), while the Seahorse room has the benefit of a covered patio with a table and two chairs.  Both rooms have large bathrooms with soap, shampoo, and plenty of towels provided.  Each room has a mini refrigerator.

Burt, the owner, greeted us at check-in and provided a very helpful overview of the property and neighborhood.  Burt was around the property frequently (he lives on the first floor) and was always helpful, without being intrusive.  A very friendly maid was on the premises from around 10am to 1pm to clean and make-up rooms and the common areas.

The four rooms in the guest house share a common lounge area with plush sofas as well as a patio with a table and chairs.  The patio has an incredibly beautiful view over Sea Point and Green Point, with a view of Robben Island in the distance.  We enjoyed working on the patio and watching the sunset.

The view from the balcony at Anchor Bay Guest House is awesome!

Unlimited red and white wine, crackers/biscuits, tea, and coffee are available both in the rooms and in the common lounge.  Beer is stocked in the common lounge fridge (and upon request in the room fridge) for a reasonable 15 Rand per bottle.

Glasses and mugs are available in each room.
Unlimited, free wine, tea, and coffee are also available in each room.

Since we work while traveling and require consistent wifi, the poor quality wifi was a big issue for us.  The wifi was slow at best (overnight and in the mornings) and unusable at worst (weekends and evenings).  Although we are relatively light wifi users, the wifi was too slow for us and often failed to load anything at all.   Although this might not be a problem for users who just want to sync social media and mail on their phones, for us it was a huge frustration that forced us to work at nearby Alexander Bar multiple evenings.  Burt, the owner, said he paid for the fastest wifi possible, so it doesn’t seem there is much he can do to improve the wifi quality.

The neighborhood around the guest house is affluent.  There are many restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and laundry places within a 15 minute walk.  Although we were approached multiple times by beggers on Main Street, we never felt unsafe.  We found it very easy (and cheap!) to take Ubers to and from the guest house.
